A brief update

Hi ya'll! Didn't forget about reading...just haven't had the chance to blog. I don't have internet at the house right now and I'm gearing up for a big move from Florida to Michigan next month so life has been C.R.A.Z.Y.

However, I've still been reading (of course). After that Sarah Palin book I had to get into something good. Eat, Pray, Love, was sent to me by a friend who (correctly) thought I really needed to read it at this point in my life. I loved it, and took a lot away from it. I think I took about 6 pages of notes throughout the course of the book. (Wouldn't it be nice if every time we went through a break up or other major life event we could travel the world?) Here are a couple of my favorite passages from the book:

"Because God never slams a door in your face without opening a box of Girl Scout cookies, some wonderful things did happen to me in the shadow of all that sorrow." (p. 22)

"You gotta stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone oughtta be." (p. 150)

Next I read Before & After. It was a tough read - a teenager fights with his (pregnant - allegedly by another guy) girlfriend, she winds up blugeoned and he's the main suspect, so he disappears. His dad does whatever he can - including destroying evidence - to help clear his son, but it was clear his mom thought he should face the music. Tough story on family love, that's for sure. I thought it was a little too drawn out, but overall a good and thrilling read.

Most recently, I finished reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I read Lucky a few years ago and absolutely loved the writing. The Lovely Bones (which is now a movie) is the story of a fourteen-year-old girl who is raped and murdered. She tells the story of her family's reactions and post-Susie life from heaven. Very interesting perspective. One of the best parts of the book:

"These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence - the connections - sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent - that happened after I was gone. And I began to see things in a way that let me hold the world without me in it. The events that my death wrought were merely the bones of a body that would become whole at some unpredictable time in the future. The price of what I came to see as this miraculous body had been my life." (p. 361).

I read The Lovely Bones in mass market paperback, which I previously thought I hated - but I flew right through the book and didn't care if it got dirty or bent or anything. I must look into this type of book in the future! So easy to take to the beach, etc.

Also - and this is BREAKING news, because I never thought I'd jump on the bandwagon, but I must. read. the Twilight series! I was forced into watching the first movie while babysitting a couple weeks ago, and just last weekend was (not so much) forced into watching New Moon. So now I think I have to read all the books. Team Edward, by the way.
